Photography has become my way of paying attention, receiving what is offered, and finding God in the wilderness.

Where It Began.

I have been a photographer for a little over twenty years, but the heart of my work began long before I understood what photography would become for me. As a man of God, husband, and father, life is full most days. Still, I always find my way back to the camera, whether that is in my backyard or hundreds of miles from home.

My love for the outdoors started young, and I owe much of that to my late father. He encouraged me to join the Boy Scouts when I was seven, and through those early years of hiking, camping, and exploring, the wilderness became part of who I was.

Some of my fondest childhood memories were made at a family cabin on Castle Rock Lake in Wisconsin. From early spring through late fall, we spent our weekends outdoors. On the lake. In the woods. Chasing trails, weather, and whatever adventure the day had to offer.

Seeing.

Over time, that curiosity carried me farther north. Into the Northwoods of Wisconsin, along the shoreline of Lake Superior, through Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains, Minnesota’s North Shore, and the wild places my father had once told me about from his own childhood growing up near Thunder Bay.

In those early days, I carried a simple instant camera. Nothing special, just enough to remember and share the adventure. Later, my father gave me his Minolta Maxxum 400Si film camera and a few lenses. That gift changed something in me.

Photography became more than a way to document where I had been. It became a way of paying attention.

Today.

Through the camera, I began to notice the moments that stopped me in my tracks. Morning light across landscape. Water flowing through ancient rock. The first breath of cold air on an October morning. The quiet feeling of being small in a place much bigger than myself.

That is still what draws me to photography today.

For me, this work has never been only about making photographs. It is about being present. Receiving what is offered. Finding God in the wilderness. And creating photographs that grow out of a real connection with the places that shape us.

Led by Light is where I continue exploring those connections through photographs, reflections, and stories from the field.

God Bless.
